An interview with Liam Pitts, a fashion and lifestyle blogger. Liam spoke to us about what makes his blog different, best practices in working with marketers and gearing up for London Fashion Week
Why should people read your blog? What makes it different? My blog is an insight into the sorts of fashion that should be appreciated, with a bit of my personality added into the posts. I like to think of my blog as a less serious side to fashion.
How do you measure the success of your website? I think the main way I personally measure the success of my blog, is by the reaction from others. It has nothing to do with views or shares or anything like that. One time I received a direct email from a girl that stumbled across my blog and loved it so much she decided to tell me. Those are the moments I cherish and it makes me realise that it’s nothing about numbers. You never really know who your next reader is, maybe your potential employer.
What’s your favourite blog and why? My favourite type of blog is one that shows a real person and not too serious (just like my own!). One that sticks in my mind is Scarphelia.com. Not only is she a great friend of mine, she writes THE best posts and there is always something that’s definitely worth a read – sometimes more than once.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a blog? My main bit of advice is don’t do it for free stuff. A blog should start with a passion and that needs to be seen throughout. It’s totally obvious when someone is pushing to post just for the free stuff that are receiving from companies or brands. That puts me off. If you really love something and have a true passion for writing, then that’s what makes a great blog. That was so long-winded but my advice is to only start a blog if it’s something you are able to do with conviction.
How do you work with marketers and PRs? Honestly, I haven’t really had much experience with PRs, but the ones that I have worked with have been projects I have thought about before actually deciding. I would think about what I would like to get from the experience and see if it is right for my blog. I am never afraid to say no. After all, it’s your blog and you need to do the best for it.
Who do you work with in brand marketing? PRs? SEOs? Anyone else? Like I said before, I haven’t really been involved with many marketers as of yet. I have thought about branching out and pushing to make my blog bigger and better but I think that will take away the authenticity of it and the spark that comes from my writing. I want to keep my blog true to myself. If a brand doesn’t fit with my concept then I simply decline.
What can marketers do better in working with you? I think it comes down to sharing the same views with me and what I have worked with before. It really shows if a company hasn’t researched your blog and thought that it was a good fit for their brand. For example, I got an email from a guy asking if I would like to write about cars and that my followers would “appreciate” it. Something like that shows that they haven’t properly looked and are just sending to anyone and everyone.
What was your blogging highlight of 2013? A girl who’s blog I read was working at London Fashion Week and offered me 2 tickets to a show she was helping out at. That was fun! It just shows that it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.
What will be big in your blogosphere in the coming months? Well, it’s just hit September and everyone knows that it’s Fashion Week month. I will try my best to be writing about shows, presentations and showcases that are going on all around the world. Hopefully this will be big. My coverage of London Fashion Week last year got a good reaction so I will try and replicate that, but BIGGER. Watch this space!
